The Best Sports Quotations of 2008

I love quotations. They’re immortal, lasting, timeless. Recently, I spent time scouring through the internet to gather the most memorable words spoken last year. There were plenty (remember the Games named 08-08-08?). Here are, based on my compilation, the best from last year…

“He may be human, but he’s from a different planet, a different galaxy.” – swimmer Alexander Sukhorukov, describing Michael Phelps

“First of all, I want to thank Tiger for not being here. That always makes things a little bit easier.” – golfer Sergio Garcia after winning The Players Championship

“I feel like a mosquito in a nudist colony. I know what to do. I just don’t know where to start.” – Pat Riley, former Miami coach, when his NBA Heat were 11-46

“I will KO Pacquiao in 5.” — De La Hoya’s prediction

“I understand the joy. He might have interpreted that in another way, but the way it was perceived was ‘Catch me if you can.’ You don’t do that. But he’ll learn. He’s still a young man.” — Jacques Rogge, IOC president, on Usain Bolt’s celebration

“Come on…when you’re running, if you see you’re going to win, you’re going to celebrate. You’re going to be Olympic champion, you’re just happy.” — Bolt

Words of Wisdom from Ali, MJ, Lance, Tiger, Kareem…

I love quotations. Ever since I was in high school, I recall tearing out and compiling every single copy of Reader’s Digest’s ‘Quotable Quotes’ that I could find. Sports quotations? My favorite. Hope you enjoy these…

“I’m tired of hearing about money, money, money. I just want to play the game, drink Pepsi, wear Reebok.” – Shaquille O’Neal

“Whoever said, ‘It’s not whether you win or lose that counts,’ probably lost.” – Martina Navratilova

“I don’t watch movies a lot. I watch sporting events. Because you can never tell how they’re going to end.” – Michael Douglas

“If they cut my bald head open, they will find one big boxing glove. That’s all I am. I live it.” – Marvin Hagler

More ‘Quotable Quotes’…

Last May 23, I wrote a similar list of 23 of my favorite sports quotations. Here are two samples…

“I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game-winning shot… and missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why…. I succeed.”

“When I was 40 my doctor advised me that a man in his forties shouldn’t play tennis. I heeded his advice carefully and could hardly wait until I reached 50 to start again.”
