The SAC

The Sportswriters Association of Cebu (SAC) is a band of 20 or so men and women whose jobs are to inform, entertain, and report to you, dear readers, the scores and facts about athletes who dunk, sportsmen like Tiger Woods who putt, and chisel-bodied boxers like AJ and Boom-Boom who score KOs.

Last Thursday at 8:30 p.m., we gathered. At Mooon Cafe, we dined, drank products by San Miguel, swapped stories about this morning’s boxing event at the Araneta Coliseum. From Sun.Star, sports editor Mike Limpag headed our line-up together with writers Marian Baring, Norvie Misa, and Edri Aznar, and columnists Atty. Jingo Quijano and myself.

But the night was not all eating and merry-making. We discussed plans for 2008 that included four projects: Starting June, a monthly forum where we’ll invite a top sports personality, possibly hold the luncheon at Casino Español, and spend two hours conversing about sports. In August, a ‘Sports Quiz Bowl’ where high school students compete. In September, an inter-school sports-writing contest to be organized by Mike Limpag. And, of course, early next year, the SAC-organized 27th All-Cebu Sports Awards.

I've been a sports columnist since 1994. First, in The Freeman newspaper under "Tennis Is My Game." Then, starting in 2003, with Sun.Star Cebu under the name "Match Point." Happy reading!

  1. Hey John!
I hope your planned events do materialize, especially that one about an inter-school sports-writing contest. Btw, your family owns moon cafe right? I’ve been there for the first time a few days ago and I must say I loved the food.
